Burns Lunch
Tomorrow, Friday 29 January 2010, children
are invited the children to wear “A Touch of Tartan” to school as part of
the celebration of Robert Burns. As part of this celebration P6 & P7 are
having a Burns Supper to which their parents have been invited.
Car Parking
Please do not use the school staff car park
for drop off/collection of your child/children. The designated parking
areas are St Mary’s Road, the Health Centre and Melrose Rugby Club and
walk to school using the path along the Gibson Park. The safety of pupils
is being compromised by those not adhering to the safe routes to school
plan. Melrose Rugby Club have kindly allowed parents to park at the club
for drop off and pick up, however the Rugby Club request this area is not
used for parking as some of their deliveries are being blocked by cars
using the area for longer term parking.

issue of safety on routes to and from school. Local councillors, SBC

funds that are desperately required to deliver the Aid and assistance

Haiti. We are asking children and staff to wear a hat to school on
Thursday 11 February 2010 and donate as much as they can to help the
people caught up in this tragic disaster.
P2M – fund raising sale
P2M has part of their topic work P2M would
like to sponsor a penguin for a year. To do this they need to raise £36.
They are organising a sale of books, toys, games and cakes for younger
children [P1-3] on Friday 5 February 2010. They ask that children from
these classes bring some money to school that day so they can buy some
goods and contribute to the cause.

Melrose Primary School Website
We are most grateful to Mrs Janice Douglas
who has taken ownership of organising and running the school web site for
so for many years. Mrs Douglas has decided she would like to step back
and hand over the reins. We are looking for some parental/adult help with
the running and maintaining of the website. We are also going to re
establish the Web Club for P6 children and would very much like some
parental support with the running of this – Thursdays 3.15 - 4.15. The
web club will run after school led by initially by Mrs Lorraine Sinclair
[P4M teacher] the children will be involved in learning how to maintain
and update the website. If you would like to be involved and have IT
skills please contact the school as soon as possible. The website is an
essential method of communication for the school and local community and
therefore is vitally important that the website continues.

Internet Safety for Children “Zip it, Block it, Flag it”
We would like to draw your attention to the new Government strategy
launched to protect children on the internet.
The principle message is a new green cross code type approach
‘Zip it, Block it,
Flag it’

The strategy will mean:
· that
for the first time ever, internet companies, charities and the
Government will be independently reviewed against new UKCCIS standards
to keep children and young people safe online
· Young
people and parents will be targeted by a new Digital Code ‘Zip it,
Block it, Flag it’ - the ‘Green Cross Code’ for internet safety. This
will be adopted by retailers, social networking sites, schools and
charities and displayed where appropriate
· parents
will be able to access a one-stop shop website for internet safety
advice hosted by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre
(CEOP) from September 2011
· online
safety will be a compulsory part of the curriculum from age 5
· Professor
Tanya Byron will review the Council’s progress, beginning in January
2010
This new strategy builds
on the significant progress already made by the Government to
implement the Byron review and provide parents and young people with
the information, advice and guidance they need to ensure they can
enjoy the internet safely.
The Government also
announced that it will lead the way globally, by exploring how child
internet safety can be improved through the UN Convention on the
Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

Advice on Internet Safety
for Parents from Lothian & Borders Police
Think U Know ICT safety Facts for
parents
-
Know what your children
are doing online and who they are talking to. Ask them to teach you to
use any applications you have never used. Keeping the computer in a
family room means that you can share your child’s online experience –
and that they are less likely to act inappropriately (i.e. via webcam).
-
Help your children to
understand that they should never give out personal details to online
friends - personal information includes their messenger ID, email
address, mobile number and any pictures of themselves, their family or
friends. If your child publishes a picture or video online, anyone can
change it or share it. Remind them that anyone may be looking at their
images and one day a future employer could!
-
If your child receives
spam/junk email & texts, remind them never to believe them, reply to
them or use them. It’s not a good idea for your child to open files that
are from people they don’t know. They won’t know what they contain — it
could be a virus, or worse — an inappropriate image or film. Help your
child to understand that some people lie online and therefore it’s
better to keep online mates online. They should never meet up with any
strangers without an adult they trust.
-
Always keep
communication open for a child to know that it’s never too late to tell
someone if something makes them feel uncomfortable.
-
Teach young people how
to block someone online and how to report them if they feel
uncomfortable.
Melrose Parish Church
The next family service at Melrose Parish
Church will be held on Sunday 6 December 2009 at 10am. This will be the
“Christmas Gift Service” and you are invited to bring along unwrapped
gifts for distribution by the Galashiels Family Support Centre. The
service will last approximately 30 minutes. Rev Bennett looks forward to
welcoming you there.
Melrose Festival Committee – help required
Calling all seamstresses! Melrose Festival
Committee is hoping to replace the dresses/trousers and waistcoats worn by
the Festival Queen and her Court. To make this task slightly easier they
are hoping to get together a group of people with some sewing (and pattern
cutting) experience in order to share the workload. If you are willing
(and able) please contact Jan McGowan in school on 01896 822103 or at home
on 01835 824724.

and end of the school day and by doing so the safety of pedestrians is
being compromised. PC Rachel Stevenson, the locality integration officer,
supports this request and is monitoring the situation.

School Dinners “Taster Session”
Parents and pupils are invited to attend a taster session
in the school hall on Thursday 10 September 2009 at 3pm. The purpose of
this session is to allow parents and pupils the opportunity to sample
dishes on the current school dinner menu, to meet the dinner ladies and
see the new fully functional production kitchen in operation.

Cheques should be made payable to “Scottish Borders Council”.
End of School Day
Please notify your child’s teacher or the school office of
any changes to your normal arrangements for your child/children’s
collection at the end of the school day.
Communication with class teachers
We have an ‘open door’ policy and welcome communication
with parents both informally and formally. However at the beginning and
end of each day the class teacher’s priority is with the children. Often,
but not always, class teachers are available at the end of the teaching
day. We ask parents to contact the school office and the office staff
will be able to establish whether the class teacher is available or not.
A member of the senior management team may be able to meet or communicate
with parents at other times of the day.
School Photographer
The photographer will be in school on Thursday 24 September
2009 to take individual and family group photos. A separate letter will
follow shortly with further information.
Morning break
Children are now having their snack either before or after
break time. There are a number of reasons for this change which include:
the promotion of healthy eating, the development of positive relationships
and that playtime is used for physical activity and play. The change also
supports our efforts to improve the school environment by reducing the
litter in the playground.
Playground
Please note that the playground is unsupervised until
8.35am and completely unsupervised after 3pm.
Hand hygiene
We shall be installing 2 hand hygiene dispensers in the
main school building to allow the pupils to clean their hands before
lunch. Please inform the school if your child would not be able to use
the hand rub gel.
Snacks
There are a number of pupils in school with nut allergies.
For this reason we ask that snack and packed lunches DO NOT contain nuts.
We would like to remind pupils that on “Munchy Monday” and
“Fruity Friday” it would be great to see healthy snacks for playtime.
Free Fruit for P1 & P2 pupils
Fruit is being provided free by the Scottish Government to
pupils in P1 & P2. The fruit will be given to children on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Head Lice
Please regularly check hair for head lice. Advice can be

this time.
Message from Helen Ross former Head Teacher
My acting post, undertaken as a secondment from Melrose,
has been caught in the many organisational changes at Scottish Borders
Council and has gone on for far longer than any of us would have thought.
I have now been matched to the permanent post of Schools’ Manager. This
means that I officially sever my ties with Melrose and whilst I am pleased
that things are moving forward I do have some mixed feelings.
I enjoy my current post but it does not compare with
working in a school. In a school there is a real sense of involvement with
children and their families, the local community and the school staff.
This involvement for me was at Melrose and that continues to a great
extent as I hear of the development of the children and adults with whom I
have had the privilege of working. I retain a real sense of pride in the
school and community.
I wish everyone involved with the school all the very best
in the future.

children, over the first weeks of the term we will be trying different
routines. Initially the P7 children will accompany the P1 children to the
first sitting of lunch, the P7s buddies will sit with the P1 lunch at the
second sitting – these children will go out to play before and after their
lunch.
Road Safety and Safe Routes to School
Due to the recent road works at the crossing patrol area
we ask that pupils be dropped off/picked up from a distance away and walk
to, or be escorted to the crossing patrol man who will help them cross
safely. Could we also remind parents that parking should be at the Health
Centre, St Mary’s Road or the Rugby Club – the staff car park should not
used as a drop off/pick up area.
Help required
We are looking for a parent, grandparent or friend who is
willing and able to help with singing practice. We require someone to play
the piano during singing practice with P4-7 pupils which takes place
approximately every second Friday from 10-10.30am.
If you, or someone you know would be able to help us out
please contact the school office.
Winmarleigh – P7 pupils
The final transport payment of £20 is due to be paid by 21
September 2009. Please make cheques payable to Melrose Primary School.

Following the consultation held last year the final

Red round neck sweatshirt, White shirt or polo

that although the new uniform has been introduced, the old sweatshirts can
still be worn.
